Part:2/?
part1"Mikey! Wait, w-wait up, please." I had lost the pale form in the shadows of the tall trees. Not knowing what to do I quickened my pace, so frantic was I to find him that I nearly ran him over. Though it wasn't really my fault, if he just didn't blend so well into the landscape, even pale as he was (all over), it wouldn't have happened. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.
"Sorry!" I scrambled back a few steps, wrapping the blanket (his blanket) tighter around me, as if it would work as a shield. But he didn't turn, just started walking once more. I frowned a bit, my forehead probably all wrinkled. He may look semi-human, but Mikey was still as foreign to me as-as </i>I don't know what, something really foreign</i>...
We walked and walked and
walked. For what seemed like hours all I had to look at was Mikey's naked back, which wasn't all that bad of a scene. The thin strap that fell diagonally across his back, holding the harp to his hip, was a sharp contrast to the pale skin. And he moved with a fluid motion, as if sensing all around him and moving to accommodate it. Strangely enough I felt no desire for him, just admiration and slight awe for his body.
"Hey, Mikey?" We had stopped at the edge of the forest for a rest, good thing too because I had a major cramp in my leg. Though I think the whole stop was for me anyway 'cause Mikey didn't look winded at all. He actually seemed quite composed, sitting cross legged on a moss covered stump across from me, while I was laying (panting a bit if you must know) on the leaf littered ground.
"Yes, Frankie?" he was looking down at me, though not in a rude way, I think it was just the way he was; all upper-classy like.
"Tell me why we're getting a ride from a pirate again. Shouldn't we like,
avoid that sort of people?" His head tilted to the side again, staring at me with those strange eyes.
"I will trust no other with this, or any passage over the sea." The silence was somehow very loud, I got the feeling Mikey didn't like the ocean. Also, he seemed annoyed at my questions so I decided to stop the barrage of thoughts crowding my mind trying to escape through my mouth.
I looked instead past the barrier of trees, to the sandy dunes beyond. They were a dark grey in the dim light of pre-dawn, little scraggly bushes poking out here and there among them. If I strained my ears I could make out the sounds of the sea, we were almost there.
Thank fucking God. Man I really, really, needed a cigarette. Patting my pockets under the blanket, I came up with a half-full pack of smokes an a neon pink lighter.
Inhaling the smoke that was so bad and yet
so good for me, I looked back at Mikey. Nearly coughing up a lung in surprise: he was a unicorn once more. The freaky thing was he didn't make one tiny sound as he changed, no 'pop' or swishy sound. Not even any leaves rustling as something new came into place.
Mikey just stared down his horsy nose at me as I recovered from my little fit.
"You should reconsider that habit, if this is the result of every puff. Very uncomfortable on the body I would think." I was about to glare menacingly up at him but thought better of it. Brushing off my clothes I stand up, once more draping his blanket over my shoulders.
"Well, let's get goin', can't be far now, can it?" He nods sharply in approval and starts out toward the dunes and sound of the ocean. I had to jog a bit to keep up...
I think my jaw was stuck in a permanently unhinged position. Everything around me was so strange, yet oddly familiar. Like the past, but with all these little differences. There were flags flapping in the early morning breeze, but I recognized none of them. Ships lined the small harbor, they looked like earth ships but small things were just
off about them. The list of things went on and on as we walked through the town (which smelled strongly of fish by the way, yek).
I was brought out of my little daze by Mikey, or rather by me running into the back of Mikey. I panicked for a second but he didn't seem to have noticed. I looked to where he was staring: a large ship, that orderly as it was on the surface, just screamed out 'pirate' at me.
Tearing my eyes away, I looked back at Mikey, who was once more naked-boy,
"Come, Frankie. This is our ship." he started forward once more, "And please refrain from running into me again, it get's a mite annoying after the first few times."
"S-sorry." I gulped, following at a safe distance. He started up the gangplank without hesitation, only to be stopped halfway by a
very intimidating person...Who just gave a shout and picked up Mikey in either a bear hug or death grip. Whatever it was, Mikey didn't seem too pleased about it, his back was stiff and hands in tight fists trapped at his sides by the big guys arms. And the look on his face that made me, who wasn't even remotely close, take a step back.
"Mikey! Where the 'ell you been all this time, eh? I was missin' yer pretty self on these long voyages, very lonely it gets."
"Captain. Enough with the charm, please set me down and I will tell you over tea, and perhaps you will finally show some sophistication in light of our guest." The guy, who could be none other than Ray, put Mikey back on his own feet and glanced in my direction; eye's bright and flashing as he looked me up and down.
"Leading more lovely young things away, Mikey? Leaving none fer decent like folks who haven't had fun in
such a long while." He was still looking at me as he said it, Mikey snorted, shaking his head a little.
"You know it is not that season yet, Captain. Now come, it is time for Tea." He ducked around Ray and continued up the gangplank. The Captain kept looking at me for a moment before turning to follow the unicorn, waving a hand for me to come with.
